Chief Vann House Days 2012 and 54th Anniversary Celebration

Friends of the Vann House will sponsor Chief Vann House Days on Saturday, July 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The 208-year-old Chief Vann House was restored 54 years ago. As part of the festivities, local craftsmen will demonstrate 19th century pottery, flute making, weaving, basket making, quilting, spinning, rug making, blacksmithing, storytelling, blowgun shooting, woodcarving, and much more.

To commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 in which many Cherokees including Joseph Vann fought, re-enactors will recreate a military camp from that era. The Chief Vann House is a historic 2 ½ story brick house built by Chief James Vann. Vann was later murdered and the house passed to his son Joseph “Rich Joe” Vann. An unusual feature of the historic home is the “floating” cantilever staircase.

On Saturday the Vann House museum will be open featuring a short film and interpretive exhibits on the Vann family and the Cherokee Nation. Volunteers will be on hand to provide tours through the Vann House, the Cherokee homestead and garden, and kitchen reconstruction.

ADMISSION: $6.00 for adults, $5.50 for seniors, and $4.00 for youth ages 6-17.
